Like everyone living in Los Angeles, Ewen Wright is a writer, director, and producer …and actor.
Ewen’s music videos have been featured in Spin Magazine, Buzzfeed, Vimeo Staff Picks, Huffington Post, and many independent music blogs. His music video Woke Up Looking was named one of the best music videos of 2019 by Rolling Stone, the only one from an artist not signed to a major label. In 2021, Ewen worked alongside Pamela Adlon to recreate the music video as part of the series finale for her acclaimed show Better Things on FX.
His surrealist comedy short, Falling, premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival, and went on to play dozens of domestic and international film festivals, winning a number of awards along the way. Falling is currently distributed on Canal+ and Kanopy.
In 2020, Ewen worked with Mandy Patinkin and Kathryn Grody, and their son Gideon, across their social media platforms, culminating in a series of Get Out the Vote videos and collaborations with grassroots organizations, the Biden campaign, and Elizabeth Warren. Their efforts resulted in millions of new followers and views and thousands of volunteer sign ups for GOTV efforts, and turned Mandy and Kathryn into TikTok stars.
Ewen and Gideon then developed an original comedy series based on Mandy and Kathryn’s lives and relationship. The pilot, which Ewen directed and co-wrote, was sold to Showtime in 2021. It was greenlit to series earlier this year, with Ewen slated to direct the new episodes while serving as Co-EP and head writer.
Ewen has received filmmaking awards from USC and UTA, the New Mexico Film Office, The Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, and film festivals around the world. He also runs his own independent production company, That Being Said Productions, whose client roster includes Slack, GitHub, The Arts for Incarcerated Youth Network, The Bay Area Video Coalition, The Solutions Project, and Nina Conti. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Laurel Butler, and their son.
